Narendra Modi was selected as the best prime minister in the world by UNESCO !!. Our National Anthem was selected as the best in the world ??. If you burn Kurkure you will get plastic !!. Frooti has traces of blood from a AIDS victim. You would have heard all or some of these news and would have believed some of them like we also did. There was even a news that the new 2000 note had a GPS chip embedded. All these were fake news and these fake news is causing so much of nuisance in the whole world. There were riots because of the fake news. Even US president Trump calls most of the news fake. There are thousands of posts that are being uploaded every second to different websites in the world. It is indeed very difficult to check if all of them are authentic and decide which to believe and which not
But now, the world’s largest search engine is taking a stand against “fake news” by rolling out a new feature that places “Fact Check” tag on snippets of articles in its news result. Limited tests have already been executed by the Alphabet Inc. Unit.
If the user asks for information about a subject that is highly contested, then at the top of your search results, Google will serve a page from a fact checker site. Similar to the Google’s policy of showing band discographies and recipes, it is a small breakout box. They will be pulled from fact checking publishers like Snopes and PolitiFact, and display information about the claim, the person who made the claim, and whether it is true or not according to them.
After the heavy criticism that the company and the other internet tech firms help in spreading misinformation and unregulated data, this is the latest sign from Google in response to the mounting pressure.
In a blog post, the company said: “These fact checks are not Google’s and presented so people can make more informed judgments.” Although Google is not going to entirely give up its usual hands-off approach as the company is giving the responsibility of fact checking to others.
“Even though differing conclusions may be presented, we think it’s still helpful for people to understand the degree of consensus around a particular claim and have clear information on which sources agree,” Google explained in a blog post.
Google and Facebook have both been facing heat for their part in the speeding growth and widespread distribution of fake news online. Google has previously taken steps to offensive content and rule out false claims, but the issue still prevails.
This new solution from Google might not eradicate the problem, but it will definitely serve as a saving grace for them when the claims regarding no action will be made by critics. “As we make fact checks more visible in Search results, we believe people will have an easier time reviewing and assessing these fact checks and making their own informed opinions.” Company said.
But it is a step in the right direction and lets hope this will lead to better filtered news in the future as we are all entitled for that .
