Come this December, neurosurgeon Dr Sergio Canavero, will perform world’s first human head transplant surgery. While the neurosurgeon has outlined plans for the operation, a science communicator and video producer has recently created a graphic video of the surgery.

Lets Look at the details.

Who is Sergio CanavVero?

Sergio Canavero is an Italian neurosurgeon and an author who first announced that he and a team of Chinese doctors will conduct the first ever human head transplant operation. He is the ex-director of Advanced Neuromodulation Group, Italy.

What Are His Achievements?

Canavero has been working on performing head transplants for years, and while so far the entirety of his patients have been mice, a monkey, and a dog, he hopes to successfully transplant a human head onto a human body in 2017. He already has his volunteer, a thirty-year-old Russian man named Valery Spiridonov who runs an educational software company and suffers from the degenerative Werdnig-Hoffman disease.

Valery Spiridonov will undergo the first head transplant surgery.

As mentioned above he is suffering from a rare degenerative disease and has voluntarily agreed to the procedure. During the procedure, Canavero will cool, almost freeze, Spiridonov’s head to between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius, rendering the patient effectively brain dead, before removing it, severing the spinal cord, then he will reattach the head onto the body of a brain-dead donor. If he fails to complete the operation within an hour of its beginning, it will fail. Theoretically, by that point, the new body will have raised the temperature of the head to normal.

In order to help prepare the patient for readjusting to a new body, he will be using virtual reality software designed by U.S.-based Inventum Bioengineering Technologies for months before the procedure that will help simulate getting used to it. However, many are still highly skeptical of the procedure. One doctor, Hunt Batjer, president of the American Association for Neurological Surgeons says:

“I would not wish this on anyone. I would not allow anyone to do it to me as there are a lot of things worse than death.”

Many Eminent Scientist are doubtful of the procedure

Many scientists are doubtful.

Most scientists believe that a head transplant surgery is risky and is not possible with existing resources and methods. They say that surgery will be fatal.

But Valery has volunteered for the operation. Even though he completely understands the risks involved he agrees to do the surgery . The surgery will have around 150 doctors during the transplant.

Valery Spiridonov and Dr Sergio Canavero

Dr Canavero said, “It is important that people stop thinking that this is impossible. This is possible, and we are working towards it.”

Recently, a science communicator posted the graphic video of surgery’s procedure.
