Trolling online has surely become the new trend, but there should be a threshold to everything. So Google just took the threshold thing seriously and has come up with a new AI tool – Perspective. Perspective has been designed to help media groups to stamp out the provocative comments on their websites. It will help editors to filter away the abusive comments and also trolls which will in a way promote only healthy discussion.
“News Organisation want to encourage discussions and engagement around their content, but find that sorting through millions of comments to find those that are trolling or abusive takes a lot of money, and time, said Jared Cohen, President of Jigsaw – Google’s social incubator. Some website have also shutdown their comments section due to lack of inventory to filter away the abusive comments. Sure, this is not the kind of solution they were looking for, and here’s Perspective that’ll change people’s perspective of commenting online totally.
Google Changing Our Perspective:
Perspective is an Application Programming Interface (API), or a set of rules that will govern the communication between systems and devices, that use machine learning to rate how comments might be regarded by other users. The tool which will be available for free is currently being tested by the media giants like Wikipedia, The New York Times, The Guardian and The Economist.
“We hope we can improve conversations online” says Cohen. The tool has been put to test by Google with The New York Times since September and the aim of the tool was to maintain a clean and a contemplative environment. As of for now the tool has been designed only for English language and focuses on filtering away the harsh and toxic language, but Cohen feels that the tool must be further enhanced and also has to be developed in other languages so as to filter away the irrelevant and out of the topic comments.
Perspective will surely prove to be a boon to everyone, as the readers and viewers of website will be able to experience a clean and a thoughtful atmosphere. But, as every coin has two sides, let’s hope Perspective doesn’t take away our freedom of expression online.
